The Ogun State media community was thrown into deep sorrow on Monday following the untimely death of a seasoned broadcaster, Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu, who tragically slumped while preparing for her afternoon shift at Ogun State Television (OGTV), Abeokuta.
The 52-year-old journalist, a respected voice and ex-officio of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, reportedly collapsed moments before going on air and was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi Aba. Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her sudden demise has left colleagues, friends, and associates within the media profession in shock and disbelief. Agbakaizu, who was also a dedicated member of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Ogun chapter, was widely known for her calm demeanor, journalistic depth, and devotion to public service.
Confirming her death, the Chairperson of Ogun NAWOJ, Comrade Sekinat Salam, expressed profound grief on behalf of the association, describing the incident as both devastating and untimely.
“We are still struggling to come to terms with the loss of Mrs. Bukola Agbakaizu. Her death came as a rude shock to us all. She was a pillar in this association, and her demise leaves a huge vacuum,” Salam said in a condolence message.
Describing her legacy, Salam added, “Bukola was a true professional — a journalist whose sense of purpose, compassion, and integrity elevated the profession. She inspired younger colleagues with her dedication and warmth.”
“She was not only a broadcaster but a mother, a mentor, and a spiritual woman who gave her best both professionally and personally. Her passing is a loss not just to NAWOJ but to the entire media industry in Ogun and beyond,” she stated.
The deceased, a mother of two, was deeply admired for her spiritual convictions, resilience, and commitment to uplifting others. Many of her colleagues remembered her as a dependable ally and a woman of grace.
“Even at 52, she lived a life that many can only aspire to — one marked by selfless service, dignity, and unwavering faith,” Salam concluded. “We pray that God grants her eternal rest and gives her family the strength to bear this irreparable loss.”
