The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has stepped aside from office, handing over the leadership of the commission to Mrs. May Agbamuche as Acting National Chairman.
Yakubu made the announcement on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
He said Agbamuche, who is the oldest serving National Commissioner, would oversee the affairs of the electoral body until a substantive chairman is appointed.
Yakubu, who expressed confidence in Agbamuche’s capacity to lead the commission, solicited the cooperation and support of other commissioners and directors to ensure a smooth transition.
He said, “I urge all members of the commission to extend their full support to the Acting Chairman as we await further directives on the appointment of a substantive head.”
Agbamuche, who has served in various capacities within the commission, is expected to continue the implementation of ongoing reforms and preparations ahead of future elections.
