The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested 10 persons in Kano metropolis for allegedly eating in public and selling food during fasting hours on the first day of Ramadan.
The arrests were carried out during an early morning raid on Wednesday to mark the commencement of the holy month.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Board’s Director of Public Enlightenment, Auwalu Ado Sheshe, who said the operation was led by the Officer in Charge of Operations, Malam Hafizu Garba Adakawa.
According to the statement, eight youths were apprehended at different locations across the city for allegedly failing to observe the Ramadan fast. The areas affected include Kantin Kwari, Grand Central Hotel Street, Railway area, Unguwar Danmaliki, Ibrahim Taiwo Road and Obasanjo Road.
In a related development, a food vendor identified as Murna Audu and a sugarcane seller, Abubakar Tukur, were arrested at Yan Rake, Kofar Kansakali, for allegedly selling food items during fasting hours.
The Board also arrested two young women aged 16 and 20 along Nassarawa Hospital Road for alleged loitering.
Speaking after their arrest, the suspects reportedly expressed remorse and pleaded for forgiveness, promising not to repeat the offences.
The Hisbah Board warned residents against what it described as immoral conduct, particularly in motor parks and other public spaces, stating that enforcement operations would be extended to such areas.
It called on ward heads and members of the public to report immoral activities within their communities to enable swift action.
The Board reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing moral standards across the state, especially during the Ramadan period.
