At least 10 passengers were injured in a multiple-vehicle accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday, while emergency responders averted a possible train collision at Ilupeju Bypass after a commercial bus broke down on a railway track.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed this in a statement, saying the bridge accident occurred in the morning when a commercial bus stopped to fix a faulty tyre and was subsequently hit by another bus.
According to the agency, a trailer subsequently rammed into the second bus, while its driver fled the scene.
LASEMA said its emergency response team administered first aid to the injured passengers before evacuating them to hospital for further medical attention.
The agency added that the affected section of the bridge was later cleared, allowing traffic to resume normal flow.
In a separate incident at Ilupeju Bypass, emergency responders prevented a possible collision between a train and a commercial bus that broke down on a railway track.
The agency said its response team deployed a light tow truck to remove the stranded vehicle from the track before an approaching train could collide with it.
LASEMA said the intervention helped avert a potentially serious incident and ensured the railway track was cleared.
The agency urged motorists to avoid carrying out roadside repairs on highways and bridges, warning that such actions could expose road users to avoidable accidents.
It also advised vehicle owners to maintain their vehicles regularly to reduce the risk of breakdowns and related incidents on busy roads.
LASEMA encouraged residents requiring emergency assistance to call its toll-free emergency numbers, 767 or 112.
