The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspected cultist, Idris Obarayi, and recovered a locally made pistol and a live cartridge during an operation in Abeokuta.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Deputy Superintendent of Police Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, following the arrest on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
According to the statement, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit responded to a distress report concerning suspected gunfire and screams in the Oke Ago-Owu area of Abeokuta.
The report was received at about 2:30 a.m., prompting the operatives to move to the scene, where the suspected criminals reportedly fled upon sighting the police.
The operatives recovered a locally made pistol and a live cartridge during the pursuit. Subsequent tracking and investigative efforts led to the arrest of Obarayi at his hideout in Ita Ogboni, Igbore, Abeokuta, at about 5:45 p.m. the same day.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, indicated that the suspect allegedly admitted to being a member of the Aiye confraternity and claimed ownership of the recovered firearm and ammunition.
The command said efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the SWAT operatives for their prompt response and subsequent investigative efforts.
Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to proactive policing and the arrest of criminal suspects, assuring residents that credible information provided to the police would receive prompt attention.
He urged residents to continue their lawful activities and report suspicious movements or incidents through appropriate police channels.
The commissioner added that the command would sustain its operations to protect lives and property across the state.
