The Federal Government has disbursed ₦3.7 billion to approximately 2,000 staff members across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions under the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund (TISSF).
The initiative is part of the government’s effort to support and motivate workers in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
A statement issued over the weekend by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs Folasade Boriowo, described the disbursement as a key milestone in the implementation of TISSF, highlighting the administration’s commitment to the welfare of the nation’s education workforce.
“The Ministry confirms the successful disbursement of ₦3.7 billion to an estimated 2,000 beneficiaries, reflecting the government’s resolve to inject direct support into the tertiary education workforce.”
“This initial tranche has reached 43 universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the federation,” the statement reads.
According to the ministry, the fund distribution ratio between academic and non-academic staff currently stands at 17% to 83%, while the male-to-female ratio is 83% to 17%.
The ministry said it would intensify efforts to encourage female staff to participate in future disbursements to achieve gender parity.
Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the intervention reflects the government’s recognition of education workers as the backbone of the system.
“TISSF is more than just a financial intervention; it is a tangible expression of the Federal Government’s appreciation for the backbone of our education system. By swiftly disbursing these funds, we are enhancing the welfare, productivity, and dignity of our staff,” he said.
Mrs Boriowo added that TISSF is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at transforming Nigeria from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-driven one.
