The remains of 27 persons killed by gunmen in Plateau State’s Bindi community, within the Barki Ladi Local Government Area, were laid to rest in a mass burial on Thursday.
The victims were among those killed in the July 15 attack that threw the community into mourning and left dozens injured. The mass burial was conducted in the neighbouring community of Rim in Riyom LGA.
The Chairman of Riyom LGA, Mafeng Gwallson, who spoke after the burial, described the killings as heartbreaking. He said, “Today, we buried 27 persons killed in Bindi-Jebu in Barkin Ladi LGA on July 15. The community has been overwhelmed with sorrow. They were our brothers and sisters, mostly farmers. It is painful.”
Gwallson explained that although the attack occurred in Barkin Ladi, many of the victims were natives of Riyom. “That is why the burial was done here. We are neighbours, and this pain is ours too,” he said.
The chairman called on security agencies to intensify their efforts in apprehending the perpetrators. “We cannot allow this to continue. People cannot go to their farms in peace. Our people deserve to live,” he said.
