The Lagos State Government has reiterated that recent demolitions in parts of Makoko, Lagos Mainland, were driven solely by safety concerns and not part of any plan to displace residents or cleanse the area.

Speaking to journalists on Monday at the Alausa Secretariat, the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Renewal, Dr Babatunde Olajide, explained that the structures affected by the demolitions were located directly beneath high-tension electricity lines, posing serious risks to lives.

“The action was necessary to protect the public. Safety is our priority,” he said.

Dr Olajide stressed that the core Makoko fishing settlement was untouched, with demolitions limited to unsafe structures.

He noted that the government is partnering with United Nations agencies to implement a comprehensive regeneration plan for the waterfront community.

The state has earmarked $2 million as counterpart funding, while an additional $8 million is expected from UN agencies to commence the project.

According to the Special Adviser, the regeneration effort aims to tackle poor sanitation, inadequate social amenities, and environmental degradation, including waste being discharged directly into the lagoon.

“Makoko, in its current state, is an eyesore. Basic infrastructure is lacking, and sanitation is very poor. Government has a responsibility to improve living conditions for residents,” he said.

Dr Olajide also assured that the regeneration programme is inclusive and will not result in gentrification or displacement.

“Our goal is to create a safe and decent environment for the existing residents. This government is not interested in removing poor people from an area and replacing them with the rich,” he emphasized.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotosho, and the General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Mr Saheed Animashaun, were present during the briefing.

The state government further disclosed that residents whose homes were demolished due to proximity to high-tension lines would receive compensation.

Olajide added that all urban renewal projects being undertaken by Lagos State are designed with a human face and are not intended to displace communities.
