The Ogun State House of Assembly has invited the management of Dangote Cement, the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority and the state Ministry of Special Duties to appear before it over environmental concerns affecting communities across the state.
The invitation followed separate reports presented by the member representing Yewa North I State Constituency, Adegoke Adeyanju, and his Odogbolu counterpart, Lukman Adeleye, during plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Adeyanju raised concerns over environmental degradation, traffic congestion and the dangers posed by the indiscriminate parking of Dangote trucks in and around Ibese.
He told the Assembly that some of the trucks were reportedly associated with Dangote Refinery, which is located outside Ogun State, adding that the situation had worsened congestion and created safety concerns along roads leading to the cement company.
The lawmaker also recalled the company’s earlier commitment to construct a trailer park to address the congestion caused by heavy-duty vehicles in the area, noting that the proposed facility had yet to materialise.
Similarly, Adeleye presented a petition concerning flooding in Atiba, an emerging community within his constituency, which reportedly resulted in the death of an eight-year-old boy.
He called for urgent preventive measures to address the recurring flooding, including the construction of standard drainage infrastructure to facilitate the free flow of water during rainfall.
Following the submissions, the Assembly resolved to invite the management teams of Dangote Cement, the Ministry of Special Duties and the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority for an interface on the issues raised.
The interface has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, when the invited organisations are expected to respond to the concerns raised by the lawmakers and discuss possible measures to address the environmental and infrastructural challenges.
