Organisers of Egbaliganza 2026 have announced plans to formally honour distinguished sons and daughters of Egbaland whose contributions have shaped the identity and progress of the Egba people.
The recognition, tagged Irin Akinkoju (celebration of heroes), is scheduled as a major segment of the March 28 programme, which forms part of the 39th Lisabi Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, the Founder and Convener of Egbaliganza, Aare (Dr) Lai Labode, Aare of Egbaland, said the initiative was designed to preserve cultural memory by acknowledging individuals whose impact has transcended Egbaland and projected its heritage to national and international audiences.
They explained that Egbaliganza goes beyond fashion, music and performance, noting that its essence lies in celebrating people who have sustained and advanced the culture over time.
“Irin Akinkoju is a structured and public act of recognition. It is a statement that Egbaland sees its heroes and will not allow their legacies to fade with time,” the organisers said.
The event will also feature the Walk of Heroes and Walk of Kings, ceremonial segments aimed at showcasing legacy, leadership and continuity within Egba society, alongside participation from cultures across over 50 countries, including Bangladesh, Uganda and the Philippines.
According to the organisers, the presence of international delegations elevates the recognition of Egba heroes from a local celebration to a continental showcase.
“What will happen on March 28 is not just a local ceremony. It is a statement to the world. The legacies being honoured will be witnessed by representatives from across Africa and beyond,” they added.
The organisers further noted that the festival draws inspiration from Lisabi Agbongboakala, the legendary Egba hero whose resistance laid the foundation for the annual Lisabi Festival.
They said Irin Akinkoju connects that historic legacy with present-day individuals who continue to uphold the spirit of excellence and service within Egbaland.
Egbaliganza 2026, a flagship cultural programme of the Lisabi Festival, is convened by Lai Labode, and is described by organisers as a platform promoting African culture and fashion exchange on a global stage.
