The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has said Nigeria’s aviation sector is facing serious disruption as the ongoing crisis in the Middle East grounds key international routes, leaving passengers stranded and airlines grappling with operational challenges.

Speaking on Frontline, a public affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese-Ijebu, Ogun State, on Tuesday, Keyamo explained that flights connecting Nigeria to Europe and Asia via major hubs like Dubai and Doha have been suspended for over two weeks, affecting thousands of Nigerians abroad.

“Most of our international traffic depends on carriers such as Emirates and Qatar Airways. The cancellations over the last fortnight stranded many passengers and forced airlines to operate skeletal schedules. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission coordinated evacuation flights, bringing many citizens home safely,” he said.

Keyamo also highlighted the economic impact of the crisis, noting that surging global oil prices have increased aviation fuel costs, adding pressure on airlines and potentially affecting ticket prices. He assured that the government is monitoring the situation and working with carriers to mitigate the impact on travelers.

On domestic reforms, the minister addressed the rollout of the cashless airport payment system, emphasizing that the hybrid model allowing both cash and electronic payments is aimed at ensuring smooth transition and eliminating corruption in airport revenue collection.

Keyamo further provided updates on the ongoing redevelopment of Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal One, noting that operations continue from a temporary terminal while the old terminal is prepared for reconstruction. He confirmed that the project is on track for completion within 22 months despite a recent fire incident that affected part of the facility.

“The sector is navigating a complex environment. International crises, energy volatility, and domestic reforms all require patience and coordinated efforts. Our priority remains safe, efficient, and passenger-focused aviation services,” he said.
