A group under the aegis of the Conference of Oyo State Professionals Forum in Politics has raised concerns over recent allegations linking former Oyo State Governor, Adebayo Alao-Akala, to a wide range of properties, describing the claims as politically driven and deliberately orchestrated.
In a statement signed by its President, Deji Kolapo, the forum said the development has sparked serious questions about the intent behind what it called a calculated attempt to drag the name of the late statesman into controversy years after his death.
Kolapo expressed doubts over the timing of the allegations, saying it was questionable to revisit such claims long after the former governor’s demise.
“It is both suspicious and unjustifiable to begin fighting a man three years after his death, especially with allegations that he owned numerous properties across Nigeria and abroad,” he said.
The group maintained that the claims carry strong political undertones capable of discrediting the legacy of the former governor and creating unnecessary tension within the political landscape of Oyo State.
“It is troubling that such weighty accusations are being circulated without credible evidence. This is not just about one individual, but about the integrity of our political system and the respect for those who have served the state,” the statement read.
The forum added that the re-emergence of what it described as previously dismissed narratives in a sensational manner suggests an attempt to mislead the public and possibly settle political scores under the guise of accountability.
According to Kolapo, “This trend is not healthy for our democracy. There must be accountability for those who spread unverified and potentially harmful claims capable of inciting political unrest.”
The group warned that if such allegations are left unchecked, they could erode public trust and destabilise the already sensitive political environment in the state.
It also called on security agencies, including the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force, to identify and caution those behind the claims.
Reaffirming its position, the forum insisted that no campaign of misinformation would diminish the contributions of Alao-Akala, urging members of the public to remain vigilant against what it described as politically motivated narratives.
