A deadly attack by armed men has claimed the lives of several military personnel, police officers and civilians in Giro Masa community, located in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, has left the community in shock, with residents recounting scenes of fear and confusion as the attackers struck.
Local sources confirmed that at least two civilians lost their lives during the assault, while the exact number of casualties among security operatives could not be immediately verified as of press time.
According to eyewitness accounts, the gunmen had been moving within the community and its surroundings before their presence was reported. Acting on information provided by residents, security operatives were mobilised to a construction company yard where the attackers were believed to be hiding.
However, the security team was ambushed on their way to the location.
A resident, who spoke anonymously, said, “The gunmen came into the village and were heading towards the construction company yard. We alerted security personnel, but they were ambushed before they could get there.”
Another witness described the situation as terrifying, noting that many residents fled for safety as gunfire erupted.
“It was terrifying. People were running in all directions as the gunmen fired at the soldiers and set the trucks ablaze,” the source said.
During the attack, the assailants reportedly set two military gun trucks on fire, further intensifying the scale of destruction.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
