Tension is mounting in Osun State following a controversial incident involving a Christian cleric and the revered Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, an ancient spiritual site widely respected by traditional worshippers.
The development comes after a viral video showed a pastor, identified as Pastor Odedoyin Ezekiel, alongside members of his congregation, reportedly entering the sacred grove to pray against the River Osun deity and other traditional beliefs associated with the site.
In the footage, the cleric was heard making forceful spiritual declarations, calling for an end to sacrifices and invoking divine authority against the revered shrine.
The act has since drawn widespread condemnation from cultural custodians, traditional leaders, and members of the public, who described it as a violation of heritage and an affront to longstanding religious traditions.
Reacting to the development, the Baba Oosa of Osogboland, Prince Osunyemi Ifarinu Ifabode, condemned the action, describing it as “a sacrilege” and a dangerous provocation capable of disrupting the peaceful coexistence among religious groups in the state.
He called on security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure that those involved are brought to justice.
However, the situation took a more disturbing turn as another video surfaced showing a group of suspected traditionalists allegedly storming a church in apparent retaliation.
The individuals were seen chanting and confronting some persons believed to be linked to the earlier incident, while carrying out acts intended to send a warning message.
Eyewitness accounts and footage suggest that the retaliatory act was staged as a symbolic response to what they described as disrespect for their faith and ancestral heritage.
The incident has since sparked fears of escalating religious tension in the state.
Speaking on the development, security expert Fabayo Samson warned that such acts of provocation and retaliation could ignite wider conflict if not urgently addressed.
“This is how avoidable crises begin,” he said. “When religious intolerance is allowed to fester, it creates a cycle of provocation and revenge that can spiral beyond control. Authorities must act swiftly to prevent escalation.”
He further urged government institutions, including the National Orientation Agency, to intensify public sensitisation on religious tolerance, noting that Nigeria’s fragile security situation cannot withstand another layer of internal conflict.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Osun State Government or security agencies regarding arrests or ongoing investigations.
The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove remains one of Nigeria’s most important cultural and spiritual landmarks, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists annually.
