The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday became a one-party legislature following the defection of six members of the Peoples Democratic Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The lawmakers, led by the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, formally announced their defection during plenary at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, bringing the 26-member Assembly fully under the control of the APC.

Those who defected alongside Adeleye include Dickson Awolaja, representing Remo North; Lawal Samsudeen, Ogun Waterside; Waliu Owode, Ijebu East; Oluseun Adesanya, Ijebu North East; and Damilare Bello, Sagamu I.

Their letter of defection, addressed to the House and read by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, attributed their decision to unresolved internal crises within the PDP.

The lawmakers stated, “Our resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party is due to the lingering internal crisis which has increasingly hindered effective and adequate political engagements.”

They added that their move was also informed by the need to align with a platform that would enable them to better serve their constituents.

“Consequently, the defection is driven by the need to align with a transformative and progressive platform that would better enable us to deliver meaningful democratic dividends to our constituents,” the letter read.

Reaffirming their commitment to legislative responsibilities, the defecting members noted that their focus remains on the welfare and development of their constituencies.

“We remain resolute in our commitment to our legislative duties as well as improved welfare and overall development of our constituents,” they stated.

They also appreciated the leadership and members of the Assembly for their cooperation, urging that their defection be accorded official recognition in line with legislative procedures.

Meanwhile, the Assembly acknowledged the list of nominees for the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission submitted by Governor Dapo Abiodun, with the Speaker directing them to appear for screening at a later date.

The nominees, Babatunde Adetona Osibodu, Tunji Akoni, Ayodele Bankole, Gbemisola Onasanya and Oluwaremilekun Olaopa, have been asked to submit 30 copies of their curriculum vitae and relevant credentials to the Clerk of the House ahead of the exercise.

In another development, four bills scaled first reading during the plenary. They include the Survey and Geoinformatics Bill, 2026; Ogun State Judicial Institute Bill, 2026; Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund Bill, 2026; and the Ogun State Rural Access Roads Agency (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
