The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has said the party will not join any coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that its principles are non-negotiable.

Adebayo stated this on Wednesday while speaking on a current affairs programme, Frontline, on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese Ijebu, Ogun State.

He disclosed that some prominent figures within the African Democratic Congress had approached the SDP for a possible alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, but noted that the party rejected the overtures.

According to him, the SDP was founded on the ideals of ethical governance, accountability, and social democracy, stressing that it would not compromise its standards for political convenience.

“We cannot compromise our platform by harbouring individuals whose previous leadership records have been problematic or who have been complicit in misgovernance,” he said.

Adebayo added that the party was not created as a vehicle for “recycling politicians,” but as a platform for credible Nigerians with proven integrity and competence.

The SDP chieftain drew a distinction between his party and opposition platforms attracting high-profile politicians, noting that past records must be considered in the quest for national leadership.

He said, “Those who have failed to deliver on promises made while in office, who have been implicated in mismanagement, and who have not shown respect for the welfare of Nigerians cannot form part of our vision.”

The former presidential candidate also dismissed speculations that the party’s stance was driven by political rivalry, maintaining that it was based on the need to provide Nigerians with trustworthy leadership.

Speaking on the growing coalition movement within the opposition, Adebayo said the SDP would rather focus on practical solutions to the country’s challenges than engage in political alliances.

“While others are distracted with internal wrangling or external pressure, SDP is focused on practical solutions that will ensure citizens’ well-being and national progress,” he added.

On allegations of interference by the ruling All Progressives Congress in opposition parties, he acknowledged that such pressures may exist but insisted they would not derail the party’s mission.

Adebayo said the SDP remained committed to addressing issues such as insecurity, unemployment, and poor infrastructure, noting that governance should prioritise citizens’ welfare over elite interests.

He also criticised what he described as “ceremonial leadership,” stressing the importance of direct engagement with citizens, particularly in times of crisis.

Referencing recent attacks in Plateau State, the SDP leader said his visit to affected communities was driven by humanitarian concern rather than political ambition.

“It is irresponsible for leaders to remain distant or limit condolence visits to airports. When we visited, we went into the heart of the communities and engaged directly with the people,” he said.

Adebayo reiterated that the SDP would continue to provide a platform for Nigerians with “unblemished records,” adding that the party’s focus remained on building a credible alternative anchored on integrity and good governance.

He said, “We must give Nigerians a clean platform where those who believe in accountability and patriotism can come forward to serve without being tainted by past failures.”
