The Ogun State chapter of the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters’ Association of Nigeria (FIBAN) has commended the state government for its decisive action against environmental offenders, urging residents and local authorities to take collective responsibility in maintaining sanitation.

In a statement signed by Chief Olalekan A. Shoyinka (Ayinla Egba), Chairman of Ogun FIBAN, the association praised the Ministry of Environment and the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) for the arrest and prosecution of 108 individuals caught indiscriminately dumping refuse across Abeokuta and other parts of the state.

FIBAN described the action, disclosed by OGWAMA’s Special Adviser, Alhaji Farook Akintunde, as a clear demonstration of the present administration’s commitment to restoring cleanliness, urban discipline, and environmental sanity in Ogun State.

The association emphasized that the enforcement of existing environmental laws is vital to protecting public health and enhancing the state’s urban aesthetics.

The association also called on Local Government Administrators to complement the state’s efforts by setting up functional waste disposal teams to assist residents with proper waste evacuation. “Government can provide structure and enforcement, but lasting change depends on the cooperation and attitude of the people,” the statement said.

Residents were further urged to patronize only government-approved waste collectors, properly bag and store refuse, avoid dumping in unauthorized areas, cooperate with authorities, and report illegal dumping activities promptly.

FIBAN Ogun State concluded that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility, stressing that a clean Ogun State is achievable if all stakeholders act responsibly and collectively.
