The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested 31 suspected internet fraudsters in a sting operation at an alleged cybercrime training centre located in Karu area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The anti-graft agency disclosed that the suspects were apprehended on Thursday during a raid on the facility, described as a “Yahoo academy,” where they were allegedly undergoing training in internet fraud.
According to the commission, the suspects comprised two kingpins believed to be the operators of the centre and several trainees.
Items recovered during the operation include mobile phones, 18 laptop computers and other electronic gadgets suspected to have been used for fraudulent activities.
Findings by the commission revealed that some of the trainees were lured from Benue State with promises of legitimate job opportunities, only to be recruited into the illegal operation upon arrival.
“The recruits were handed communication devices, computers and software, setting the stage for their training in cyber fraud,” the EFCC stated.
The agency added that the suspects were housed within the premises of the academy and their movements were strictly restricted.
It further revealed that the operators confiscated the trainees’ mobile phones, effectively cutting them off from the outside world.
The commission also alleged that the recruits were subjected to corporal punishment, including physical assault, as a means of enforcing compliance and discipline within the facility.
The EFCC said the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
