The Ogun State House of Assembly has moved a step closer to establishing a structured funding framework for education and skills development, as a bill seeking to create the Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund scaled second reading on Thursday.

The bill, titled “H.B. No. 034/OG/2026 – A Bill for a Law to Establish the Ogun State Education and Skills Trust Fund for Regulating Education Infrastructure and Facilitating Skills and for Other Connected Purposes,” was debated during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Leading the debate, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Yusuf Amosun, said the proposed law was aimed at promoting infrastructural development within the education sector across the state.

In his contribution, Damilola Soneye noted that the trust fund would ease pressure on government budgetary allocations, while also strengthening maintenance culture in public schools.

Supporting the bill, Bisi Oyedele described the initiative as timely, saying it would drive the renovation and rehabilitation of schools in both rural and urban communities.

Also speaking, Lukman Adeleye said the bill would add value to the state’s development agenda, particularly in the area of human capital development for youths.

A former Speaker of the Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, stressed the need for fairness in the implementation of the proposed fund, urging that resources be distributed equitably across all parts of the state.

Responding, Elemide referred the bill to the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology for further legislative work.

The Speaker also announced that a stakeholders’ meeting would hold on Friday at 1pm to allow relevant actors in the education sector to make inputs into the proposed legislation.

He said the engagement was necessary to ensure a smooth and timely passage of the bill.
