The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday cautioned residents against the misuse of road infrastructure, particularly the dumping of refuse and building materials on road shoulders, as it adopted a set of revised physical planning regulations aimed at strengthening development control across the state.
The Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, gave the warning during plenary while responding to a matter of urgent public concern raised by a lawmaker representing Sagamu II State Constituency, Ademola Adeniran.
Adeniran had drawn the attention of the House to what he described as the indiscriminate dumping of building materials on road shoulders by some residents, a practice he said had persisted for months and was posing challenges to road users.
He noted that the development had continued to damage road infrastructure, obstruct traffic flow and undermine ongoing maintenance efforts in affected areas.
“Our roads are being subjected to avoidable pressure due to human activities. This trend, if not urgently addressed, will further deteriorate public infrastructure and create more hardship for commuters,” Adeniran said.
In his remarks, Elemide urged residents to desist from acts capable of endangering public infrastructure, stressing that road shoulders were not designed for storage of construction materials or refuse disposal.
The Speaker maintained that protecting public infrastructure remained a collective responsibility, adding that the Assembly would not hesitate to support measures that promote orderliness and safeguard public assets.
In a related development, the House passed a resolution adopting the report of its Committee on Lands and Housing on the revised regulations of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.
The report, presented by the committee chairman, Damilola Soneye, and seconded by Lukman Adeleye, sought to enhance planning standards and regulate physical development across the state.
Following the presentation, the House Leader, Yusuf Sheriff, moved a motion for the adoption of the report, which was unanimously supported by lawmakers through a voice vote.
The adopted regulations include the Ogun State Building Production Management Regulation, 2025; Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Regulation, 2025; Ogun State Slum Regeneration Regulation, 2025; Ogun State Outdoor Physical Furniture Regulation, 2025; and Ogun State Layout and Land Subdivision Regulation, 2025.
The Speaker thereafter directed that copies of the resolution be transmitted to relevant authorities for necessary action.
