The National Association of Nigerian Students has assured students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic affected by alleged irregularities in the disbursement of funds under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund scheme that efforts are underway to secure refunds and correct the anomalies.
The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the President of NANS, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, who provided an update on the association’s engagement with the institution’s management over the controversy.
Afeez said the student body had made significant progress following its intervention and subsequent calls for action over the alleged irregularities involving NELFUND disbursements at the polytechnic.
According to him, relevant authorities have reached out in a bid to ensure that the alleged anomalies do not persist and that the objectives of the student loan scheme are protected.
“In the last few hours, I have been inundated with calls from relevant authorities, all geared towards ensuring that these irregularities do not continue and that the purpose of the loan scheme is not defeated,” he said.
The NANS president urged affected students not to take actions that could hinder ongoing efforts to resolve the matter, noting that the association had taken charge of the process.
He said, “I call on all the affected students of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic not to hurriedly take actions that may further complicate or frustrate the refund process, as the apex leadership has taken full charge of the matter to ensure that the anomalies are corrected.”
Afeez disclosed that the institution’s management had initiated contact towards resolving the issue, stressing that any resolution must prioritise the interests of students.
He added that NANS would soon meet with the management to ensure that all affected students receive refunds and that any excess funds are returned to NELFUND.
“Be informed that the leadership of NANS will, in no distant time, meet with the management to this effect and ensure that all the anomalies are corrected, all affected students are properly refunded, and all excess funds will be returned to NELFUND,” he stated.
The NANS president further reassured students of the association’s commitment to their welfare, urging them to remain calm while engagements with the institution continue.
