A heavy-duty trailer laden with iron rods crashed into the perimeter fence of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, Abia State, in the early hours of Thursday after reportedly losing compression while climbing a hill along the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Expressway.
The accident occurred near Finbarrs Road, close to the Abia State High Court, causing a major traffic gridlock on the busy expressway.
The trailer driver, who declined to disclose his identity, said the incident happened around 2:00 a.m.
He explained that the vehicle lost compression while ascending the hill, causing it to roll backwards uncontrollably before crashing into the hospital’s perimeter fence.
The impact left the trailer obstructing a section of the federal highway, resulting in heavy traffic congestion during the morning rush hour as motorists struggled to navigate the affected area.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation of any casualty. Authorities were, however, making efforts to evacuate the trailer and restore the free flow of traffic.
The driver escaped unhurt in the accident, while investigations into the incident were ongoing.
