A 22-year-old teacher, Maryam Usman, has allegedly died after she was assaulted by the father of one of her pupils for disciplining the child at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka-Igah, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident reportedly began on June 17 after the teacher disciplined a pupil for misconduct. During the process, the child allegedly fell and sustained an arm injury.
The pupil’s father, identified as Ishaq Abdullahi, was said to have stormed the teacher’s residence with two other persons and allegedly assaulted her over the incident.
Sources in the community alleged that Maryam was attacked again the following day while on her way to a mosque, leaving her with severe injuries.
She was initially taken to a clinic before being transferred to a hospital in Okpo, where she reportedly died on June 25.
Her brother, who spoke on condition of anonymity, called on security agencies to ensure justice for the deceased.
He said, “She was taken to a clinic and later transferred to a hospital in Okpo, but her condition continued to deteriorate. Sadly, she died on June 25, 2026, at about 5:00 a.m.”
The brother added, “We believe the repeated assaults contributed to her death and we want those responsible to be brought to justice.”
A community elder, Drisu, disclosed that the deceased and the family of the pupil were related, adding that efforts had been made to resolve the dispute before her death.
He also alleged that some members of the deceased’s family later vandalised the residence of the pupil’s father following the tragic incident.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said investigations were ongoing.
Afusat said, “The victim sustained serious injuries and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital, Okpo, for further medical attention. She, however, passed away on June 25, 2026.”
The police spokesperson added, “Arrangements are ongoing to convey the corpse to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for medical examination and autopsy. The suspects fled before the arrival of the police, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them. Upon their arrest, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.”
