President Bola Tinubu has extended warm felicitations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 88th birthday, acknowledging his immense contributions to Nigeria’s development and global diplomacy.

In a personally signed statement on Wednesday, Tinubu described Obasanjo as an “extraordinary leader and statesman” whose life and career have been intricately woven into Nigeria’s history for over six decades.

“Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing the former president’s pivotal roles in national reconciliation after the civil war, military leadership, and the transition to democratic governance.

Obasanjo, a retired general, first served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1976 to 1979, overseeing the country’s initial democratic transition. Two decades later, he returned as a civilian president in 1999, implementing far-reaching economic and political reforms.

Tinubu praised Obasanjo’s leadership and legacy, noting that his policies “profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians and contributed significantly to national unity and progress.”

Beyond governance, the president recognized Obasanjo’s lasting influence in Nigerian politics and international diplomacy, describing him as a “troubleshooter” whose interventions often shape public discourse.

“Out of office, only a few will deny that the former president continues to wield considerable influence among the political elite at home and is well-regarded abroad, where he is an ambassador of global peace,” Tinubu remarked.

While acknowledging that Obasanjo’s views on national affairs have sometimes sparked controversy, Tinubu commended his dedication to governance, peace, and African unity.

“As he marks 88 years today, I pray that God Almighty grants him strength and more years so that the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge,” the president concluded.

On behalf of the Nigerian government and its people, Tinubu extended heartfelt congratulations to Obasanjo, calling him a “great patriot” whose service to the nation remains invaluable.
