The National Open University of Nigeria has appointed Ramatu Ibrahim as Acting Bursar following the killing of the university’s substantive Bursar, Nasir Marafa, in Zamfara State.
Ibrahim, who was the Deputy Bursar, Treasury, was appointed by the university management to ensure continuity in its financial administration following Marafa’s death.
The appointment was announced by the university Registrar, Oladipo Ajayi, in a public notice issued on Tuesday evening.
According to Ajayi, the appointment took immediate effect and was intended to ensure “continuity, stability and effective leadership” in the university’s financial administration during the period.
Marafa was reportedly shot dead in Zamfara State, with the Registrar announcing his death on Sunday. His killing occurred shortly before the university commenced a three-day mourning period in his honour, which began on Monday and ends on Wednesday.
The university described Ibrahim as an experienced administrator with extensive knowledge of its financial operations.
It noted that she had served in several key units of the Bursary Department, where she acquired experience in accounting, financial management, treasury operations and related administrative processes.
The management said her previous role as Deputy Bursar, Treasury, enabled her to provide professional leadership and oversight of the university’s treasury operations.
It expressed confidence that her experience and familiarity with the institution’s financial systems would enable her to provide effective leadership while sustaining efficient, transparent and accountable financial services.
Ibrahim’s appointment was approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, with the concurrence of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Isa Yuguda.
Meanwhile, the university mourned Marafa, describing him as a dedicated and dependable officer who served the institution with commitment, professionalism and integrity.
Management said his contributions to the financial administration and development of the university would be remembered with gratitude and appreciation.
