A mechanic identified simply as Samson has been killed after he was allegedly lured to Abijo, in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State, under the pretext of repairing a Mercedes-Benz car.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, September 15, is currently being investigated by the Lagos State Police Command.
Samson, who operated a mechanic workshop around the Warike Estate area of the community, was reportedly contacted to repair a Mercedes-Benz and proceeded to the location where the vehicle was said to be.
According to a police source, the mechanic was allegedly taken into a bush after arriving at the location, where he was subsequently hacked to death.
“The victim was lured to the location on the pretext of going to repair a Mercedes-Benz car. We were told that when he got there, he was taken into the bush and killed,” the source said.
The source added that investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.
The incident has also been linked by an anti-cultism advocacy platform to an alleged reprisal attack involving rival cult groups in the area.
The platform claimed that Samson was killed in retaliation for the death of an alleged Eiye member, identified as Ola Sheu, who was reportedly killed around Adeba Bus Stop in Lakowe, Ibeju-Lekki, on September 9.
The claim, however, has not been independently established by the police.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, said the family of the deceased initially reported that Samson was missing.
She said following the report, detectives visited his apartment and commenced efforts to trace his whereabouts.
“Following the receipt of the information, detectives reportedly swung into action and visited the victim’s apartment,” Adebisi said.
She added that efforts were ongoing to track the victim’s mobile phone and establish what happened to him.
The police spokesperson said the case remained under investigation.
