Oyo State has been thrown into mourning following the death of former governor, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, who passed away on Sunday morning, just days to his 90th birthday.

Dr. Olunloyo, a brilliant mathematician and respected elder statesman, served as the Governor of Oyo State in 1983 during the Second Republic. His legacy, many say, was marked by intellect, humility, and a deep commitment to the progress of both Oyo State and Nigeria.

In a statement on Sunday, Governor Seyi Makinde expressed profound grief over the passing of the elder statesman, describing him as a selfless leader whose wise counsel he personally benefitted from.

“We are saddened by the passing of His Excellency, Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, this morning, just days before his 90th birthday,” the governor said.

“Baba was a brilliant mind, a renowned mathematician. He will be remembered for his selfless contributions to the development of Oyo State and Nigeria. I am honoured to have had the privilege to know him and benefit from his wise counsel. He will be sorely missed.”

As a mark of respect, Governor Makinde has ordered that flags in the state be flown at half-mast for one week.

“May Baba’s soul rest in peace, and may God grant his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss,” he added.

Dr. Olunloyo, who would have turned 90 in a matter of days, was widely celebrated for his intellectual contributions in mathematics and for his roles in public service and policy.
