The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode Adebowale, has charged newly matriculated students to embrace discipline and prioritize excellence as they begin their academic journey in Nigeria’s premier university.

Professor Adebowale gave the charge during the matriculation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic session, held in Ibadan. While addressing the fresh students, he described matriculation as more than a ceremonial event, but rather “a rite of passage that symbolizes a formal admission into the university.”

He advised the students to move away from the learning style of secondary school and adopt independent learning habits suited for higher education. “You are no longer in secondary school where students are spoon-fed. The university expects you to take responsibility for your learning and development,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasized the significance of upholding the university’s high standards. “As undergraduate students of the University of Ibadan, society expects the best from you. Walk the path of excellence, which this university holds dearly,” he added.

Professor Adebowale disclosed that of the over 22,000 candidates who applied for admission, only 4,650 were offered provisional admission, and 4,215 of them completed the screening and are officially recognized as students of the institution.

He encouraged the students to be resilient and committed to personal development. “Strive for distinction in your studies, character, and extracurricular engagements. Prioritize excellence, embrace discipline, leverage opportunities, uphold integrity, and contribute to UI’s enduring legacy,” he said.

The matriculation lecture was delivered by Dr. Olukayode Abiola Aiyenuyo, a distinguished alumnus of the institution who graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.

Sharing his personal experience, Dr. Aiyenuyo said, “After spending years at the University of Ibadan, I came out better equipped to face life headlong.” He urged the students to view this phase as a new chapter and seek divine direction in their pursuits. “A chapter has closed, and a new one has begun. Seek God’s guidance for a true path to success,” he advised.

The Registrar of the University, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu, administered the Matriculation Oath to the students during the ceremony. The event concluded with the students expected to complete their induction by signing the matriculation register and validating the oath at a court of law.
