The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel from unauthorised assignments, particularly those involving escort and guard duties for private individuals and VIPs.

The directive was announced on Tuesday during a strategic conference with PMF Squadron Commanders held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP said the move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen internal security, enhance professionalism, and reposition the PMF in line with its original mandate.

“The Police Mobile Force was created as the elite tactical arm of the Nigeria Police Force to respond swiftly to riots, emergencies, and violent threats. Unfortunately, many of its operatives have been diverted from this critical role,” the IGP said.

To address this, the IGP announced a number of reforms, including the immediate recall of all PMF operatives deployed to non-core duties, mandatory quarterly training focused on ethics and operational standards, and the full activation of combat-ready units in all squadrons for tactical response.

“We can no longer allow the misuse of this elite force. Their role must align with constitutional expectations, not private arrangements,” he added.

Egbetokun emphasized that PMF Commanders would now be held personally accountable for the deployment and conduct of their personnel. He urged them to “lead by example through regular inspections, mentorship, and strict enforcement of discipline and human rights.”

Reiterating the Force’s commitment to excellence, the IGP disclosed plans to introduce new leadership strategies and capacity-building initiatives tailored to modern security demands and global best practices.

He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support to the Police Force and acknowledged the contributions of international partners in enhancing the Force’s technical capabilities.

“This reform is both a professional and moral imperative. The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to its duty of safeguarding lives, protecting property, and ensuring national peace,” the IGP concluded.
