A 36-year-old Nigerian cardiologist based in the United States, Ikenna Erinne, has reportedly died by suicide after a court ruling ordered him to pay $15,000 in monthly child support to his ex-wife. The tragic incident occurred on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
Dr. Erinne, originally from Anambra State, had been locked in a protracted divorce battle with his estranged wife, including disputes over the custody of their children. Following a tense legal battle, a U.S. court ruled in favor of his ex-wife, and the ruling imposed the monthly child support payments on him.
Confirming the tragic news, Nigerian-American Clayton Udo shared on X.com, expressing that the financial strain of the court’s verdict had deeply affected Dr. Erinne. “The abuse of African men in the USA must come to an end. In a deeply troubling case, Dr. Ikenna Erinne, an American-trained cardiologist, allegedly took his own life after an American court ordered him to pay his ex-wife $15,000 monthly, following a prolonged and contentious divorce case,” Udo wrote.
Udo, who claims expertise in mental health and psychological abuse, revealed that Dr. Erinne had already spent thousands of dollars on legal fees before the court decision.
He added that the pressure from losing his medical license and the court ruling ultimately led to the doctor’s death. “He shot himself to death. He spent thousands of dollars in legal fees – wasted money. I am talking about a process that impoverishes you. You go to court and they take all your money.
He lost his license as a cardiologist and was left with restricted access to his children,” Udo further explained.
Obim Onujiogu, a member of the Nigerian-American community, also paid tribute to Dr. Erinne, calling him a compassionate healer and devoted family man.
Onujiogu shared on Facebook that Dr. Erinne’s funeral would take place on Monday, February 3, 2025, in Elkridge, Maryland.
Dr. Ikenna Erinne, born on March 4, 1988, is survived by his children Ugonna and Munachi, his parents Engr. Chris and Mrs. Chinwe Erinne, and his siblings Chuks, Onyi, Kenny, and Gechi. A celebration of his life will be held at Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home in Elkridge, Maryland, followed by interment at Meadowbridge Memorial Park.
