The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been laid to rest in his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The 91-year-old monarch, who passed away after a reign spanning over six decades, was buried on Monday in a solemn ceremony conducted according to Islamic rites. His final resting took place away from public view, in keeping with Ijebu royal customs.

Dignitaries from across the country converged on Ijebu Ode to pay their last respects to one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected traditional rulers. Among those present were Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun ; former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel; billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote; and Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as K1 De Ultimate.

Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960 at the young age of 26, became a defining figure in the history of Ijebuland and Nigeria’s traditional institution. Known for his fearless voice, principled leadership, and commitment to modernization, he earned nationwide respect that spanned across generations.

While the burial ceremony was kept private, Ijebu sons and daughters flooded the town in mourning, dressed in solemn attire and traditional fabrics, with many describing the late monarch as “irreplaceable” and “a beacon of justice and cultural strength.”

Born on May 10, 1934, the late Oba studied both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom before ascending the throne. His reign witnessed not only cultural preservation but also significant advocacy for constitutional roles for traditional rulers in national governance.
