Security personnel on Monday thwarted an attempt by members of the Osugbo traditional cult to disrupt the Islamic burial rites of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who was laid to rest in Ijebu Ode.

The cult members, whose arrival at the monarch’s private residence created a stir among sympathisers, were promptly confronted by soldiers and escorted out of the premises. Eyewitnesses said the traditionalists had tried to assert control over the burial process, prompting swift intervention to prevent escalation.

The late monarch, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91, was buried at about 6pm on Monday beside his parents, in accordance with Islamic rites. Prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Ijebuland, Sheikh Muftaudeen Ayanbadejo.

The incident revived tensions surrounding the controversial Obas and Chiefs Law of 2021, which grants traditional rulers in Ogun State the right to be buried according to their religious beliefs. The Osugbo group had previously rejected the law, insisting on adherence to long-standing traditional burial customs.

Oba Adetona, a key figure in the passage of the burial rights reform bill, had reportedly requested a Muslim burial, aligning with his faith.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, who attended the funeral, described the monarch’s reign as one of immense wisdom, courage, and progress. He noted that Oba Adetona was not only a revered royal father in Ijebuland but a national figure whose legacy touched lives far beyond the region.

“Kabiyesi was a principled and incorruptible monarch. He was a social engineer, a philosopher, and a transparent leader whose influence shaped modern Ijebuland,” the governor said.

Also present at the ceremony were former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former governors Segun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, as well as several serving and former lawmakers.

Speaking to reporters, the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, Chief Sunny Kuku, said the Awujale elevated the institution of monarchy through his honesty and devotion to community development. He added that Oba Adetona’s leadership brought global attention to the Ojude Oba Festival and created new opportunities for the Ijebu people.

Meanwhile, former Governor Gbenga Daniel called for the creation of a new state out of the old Ijebu Province in honour of the monarch, noting that it was one of the dreams the late royal father held dear.
