The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, where he will be buried later today according to Islamic rites.
After a brief military ceremony held at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina, the late leader’s body was conveyed by road in a sombre procession led by top government officials, military personnel, and close family members.
The coffin, wrapped in the Nigerian flag, was earlier flown into Katsina from London where Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, following a brief illness at the age of 82.
Vice President Kashim Shettima led the federal delegation that accompanied the body from the United Kingdom, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive. Tinubu himself arrived Katsina ahead of the body’s landing and joined in receiving it on the tarmac, alongside Governor Dikko Radda and other dignitaries.
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also travelled to Katsina to participate in the final farewell.
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, will be laid to rest this evening in his Daura residence.
Hundreds of mourners lined parts of the route as the convoy made its way into Daura. Among them were community elders, religious leaders, political associates, and ordinary Nigerians who came to bid farewell to a man widely known as Mai Gaskiya, meaning “The Honest One.”
Security was tight, with military and police personnel stationed across strategic points in both Katsina and Daura to ensure order and safety throughout the funeral proceedings.
