President Bola Tinubu has renamed the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of his late predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made on Thursday during a special session of tributes held by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in Abuja to reflect on the legacy and contributions of the former President, who died recently and was buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

President Tinubu, while addressing members of the council, said the renaming was a mark of respect for Buhari’s lifelong dedication to the country, especially his efforts in stabilising the North-East region and promoting educational development.

“In recognition of his enduring legacy and selfless service to Nigeria, the University of Maiduguri will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu announced during the session.

The President described Buhari as a leader who served with integrity and left behind a record of discipline, sacrifice and patriotism that deserves to be preserved for future generations.

The session, which brought together members of the federal cabinet and other senior government officials, was convened to honour the late President’s memory and reflect on his years in office.

Confirming the announcement, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the decision reflects the Tinubu administration’s resolve to honour national icons who made significant contributions to the country’s development.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, died earlier this week. His death has drawn a wave of tributes from leaders across the country and beyond.
