The Ogun State Government has commenced formal arrangements for the state burial of the late Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona GCON, who passed on Sunday, July 13, 2025, and was laid to rest the following day.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the government announced the constitution of a State Burial Committee to coordinate and oversee all official activities in honour of the late monarch, whose reign and legacy spanned decades of distinguished leadership.
The committee, chaired by Mr. Talabi, comprises top government officials, traditional representatives, and community leaders drawn from Ijebuland. Members include the Chief Economic Adviser and Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Dapo Okunbanjo; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat; Orimolusi of Ijebu Igbo, Oba Lawrence Adebajo; and several high-ranking Otunbas, Baloguns, and representatives of regberegbe and heritage groups.
The SSG emphasized that the committee is tasked with ensuring a dignified and culturally rooted state burial for the revered monarch, whose contributions to Ogun State and Nigeria remain indelible.
At its inaugural meeting held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the committee resolved to work closely with the family of the late Kabiyesi and other stakeholders. The family, who were present at the meeting, expressed readiness to collaborate with the state in planning the final rites.
The committee also noted that the burial ceremonies will attract a wide array of national and international dignitaries, including the anticipated presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, who is expected to lead the Federal Government’s delegation in paying last respects to the late royal icon.
