Following the transition of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, GCON, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, the Ijebu Ode Local Government has announced the reopening of all major markets in the area.
Executive Chairman of the council, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, disclosed that markets including Ita Ale, Ita Osu, and Oke Aje will officially resume full operations on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Alebiosu explained that the reopening follows the conclusion of the customary mourning period observed to honour the late Awujale, whom he described as the Orisa of Ijebuland. He noted that the local government, in consultation with traditional authorities, had prioritized tradition and respect while also considering the need to alleviate economic hardship faced by residents and traders.
“We took this decision to strike a balance between honouring our departed king and ensuring that our people do not continue to suffer undue economic hardship,” the chairman said.
He also refuted claims that markets were ordered shut for 75 days, describing such reports as false and misleading. “Let it be noted that no directive was ever issued to shut down markets for 75 days,” he clarified.
Hon. Alebiosu appreciated the patience and cooperation shown by traders and the general public during the mourning period and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to upholding tradition while ensuring the economic wellbeing of the people.
“We remain committed to maintaining order, tradition, and the welfare of all Ijebu sons and daughters,” he added.
