The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into a fatal motor accident that claimed one life and left six others injured on Sunday, February 4, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the crash involved a Lexus ES 350, driven by 26-year-old Abiodun Michael of Isolu, Funaab Road, Abeokuta, and a Zafira 1.8 Space Wagon, driven by 55-year-old Popoola Ishola Kayode of Olodo via Odeda.

The Lexus driver, who was heading towards Abeokuta from Ibadan, allegedly failed to reduce speed while navigating a sharp bend, lost control, and veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the Zafira.

Tragically, Mr. Popoola Ishola Kayode died on the spot, while six of his passengers sustained various degrees of injuries. The driver of the Lexus and his occupants fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Omolola Odutola, stated that the Odeda Divisional Police Officer immediately dispatched traffic police and patrol teams to the accident site for rescue operations.

“The injured victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Odeda, and those with severe injuries, including fractures, were later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for specialized care,” Odutola said.

She further disclosed that the deceased’s family retrieved his body for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. The vehicles involved in the crash were also towed to the police station for forensic analysis.

“The driver of the Lexus car and his passengers fled the scene, but we are actively working to track him down. Anyone with relevant information on his whereabouts should contact the nearest police station,” she added.

The Ogun State Police Command reiterated its commitment to road safety enforcement and warned that reckless drivers would face the full wrath of the law.
