A lone driver was confirmed dead on Monday morning after his Toyota Highlander crashed into a commercial bus that was illegally loading passengers at Volkswagen bus stop, inward Mile 2, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The accident, which occurred in the early hours, involved a Toyota Highlander with registration number APP 150 EY and a painted T4 commercial bus with number plate KJA 328 XH.

Eyewitnesses said the Highlander driver was at high speed when he lost control and rammed into the stationary bus with great force. The impact killed him instantly.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived shortly after the incident, extricated the lifeless body from the wreck, and handed it over to the Ojo Police Division. The remains were later deposited at the C-Niger Mortuary, Abule Ado.

The accident caused a heavy gridlock along the busy corridor, but LASTMA operatives swiftly cleared the wreckage and towed the vehicles to the Ojo Police Division for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the family of the deceased and cautioned drivers against reckless driving and overspeeding.

He condemned the conduct of commercial drivers who pick passengers at unauthorized spots, stressing that bus stops provided by the government must be strictly followed.

Bakare-Oki said, “The sanctity of human life must never be compromised by recklessness on our highways. We shall continue to intensify enforcement and sustain public enlightenment campaigns to prevent needless tragedies.”
