Tottenham Hotspur secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after Mathys Tel scored a stunning second goal and Cole Palmer was sent off in the closing stages of the Premier League encounter.
The visitors took the lead in the 78th minute through a costly goalkeeping error by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen Penders, before Tel doubled their advantage in the 86th minute with an impressive individual effort.
Chelsea’s afternoon deteriorated further when Palmer received a second yellow card and was dismissed, leaving the hosts with 10 men as Tottenham moved closer to a historic victory at Stamford Bridge.
Palmer was booked earlier in the second half following a confrontation with Tottenham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. He was subsequently sent off after a late challenge on Conor Gallagher, which included contact with the midfielder’s ankle.
The dismissal left Chelsea with a difficult task as they attempted to recover from the setback, while Tottenham capitalised on their numerical advantage to strengthen their control of the contest.
Tottenham’s opening goal came from a corner delivered by Mateus Fernandes. Penders came off his line to deal with the delivery but mistimed his punch, sending the ball into his own net in a costly mistake on his first Premier League start.
The goal rewarded Tottenham’s efforts in a match in which Chelsea struggled to impose themselves, with the hosts unable to find a breakthrough despite making several changes in search of an equaliser.
Tel then produced the decisive moment of the match, beating Josh Acheampong before gliding past Maxence Lacroix and firing a clinical finish into the bottom corner.
The goal sparked wild celebrations among Tottenham’s players, coaching staff and travelling supporters, while Chelsea faced the prospect of a disappointing home defeat.
Chelsea introduced Brazilian youngster Estevão in an attempt to revive their attacking threat, but the forward’s immediate effort went into the side netting.
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi also made changes, bringing on Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro as his side sought to maintain their advantage.
Earlier in the encounter, Tottenham suffered a setback when playmaker James Maddison was forced off with an injury after going down without apparent contact.
Despite the setback, Tottenham maintained their focus and punished Chelsea’s defensive mistakes to secure all three points.
