The Federal Government has clarified that it has not signed any agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), insisting that discussions so far have only produced draft proposals.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, noting that reports suggesting otherwise were inaccurate.

“I read some reports in the media on Thursday indicating that we have a meeting with ASUU. That was not correct. Rather, we had an expanded meeting with relevant stakeholders to review the content of the draft agreement,” Alausa explained.

He revealed that a committee chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education has been constituted to review ASUU’s demands line by line and prepare a counter-proposal.

The outcome of this process, according to him, will then be presented to the Yayale Ahmed-led committee for onward transmission to the union.

The minister stressed that it was important for Nigerians to understand the true state of discussions.

“It’s important for Nigerians to know that the government has no signed agreement with ASUU. All we had over the years was a draft agreement that was not signed,” he said.
