The political and business communities in Nigeria are mourning the death of Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, former Social Democratic Party (SDP) governorship candidate in the 2024 Ondo State election.
He passed away at his residence in Victoria Garden City, Lagos, on Wednesday at the age of 60.
Akingboye, popularly known as OBA, was a renowned businessman and philanthropist. Until his death, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Benshore Maritime and Clog Oil Systems, and as President of the WeAfrica Group. He also held the traditional title of Olowomeye I of Ikaleland, reflecting his standing in both business and cultural circles.
In a statement confirming his death, his aide, Mr. Oyeniyi Iwakun, described Akingboye as “a beacon of hope to countless people whose passing is a devastating loss to both the business and political communities in Nigeria.”
The SDP in Ondo State expressed deep sorrow over the loss of its former governorship candidate. The party described him as “a remarkable leader, philanthropist, and business tycoon who dedicated his life to serving the people of Ondo State.”
During his campaign in 2024, Akingboye shared his vision for a brighter future for Ondo State, emphasizing good governance, social justice, and sustainable development.
The SDP noted that his leadership and passion inspired many and that his legacy would continue to shape the state’s political landscape.
The party also offered condolences to his family, friends, and supporters, praying for the repose of his soul. “May his memory inspire us to continue striving for a better Ondo State,” the statement added.
