The rivalry between the Nigeria Police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will once again take center stage as both teams battle for glory in the final of the 5th edition of the Ogun SWAN Security Cup on Friday at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta.
The highly anticipated encounter promises another chapter in the fierce football rivalry that has defined the competition over the years, with both sides boasting a history of tense and thrilling clashes.
En route to the final, the Police Machine crushed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) 5–0 in a one-sided semi-final on Monday, while NSCDC narrowly defeated the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) 1–0 to book their place in the title match.
The Civil Defence team will be aiming to reclaim bragging rights after losing to the Police in recent editions. In 2021, NSCDC lifted the maiden trophy with a 1–0 win over Police Machine. However, the Police bounced back in 2023 to edge Civil Defence 2–1 in the final, claiming the ₦500,000 prize money. Their dominance continued in 2024 when they triumphed 4–2 on penalties over the same opponents in the semi-final.
This year, the Police Machine reaffirmed their superiority by beating NSCDC 4–3 in an electrifying group stage encounter before dispatching Ogun State Fire Service 2–1 to reach the last four.
The final match, organized by the Ogun State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), is scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m. on Friday and is expected to draw sports enthusiasts, security personnel, and football lovers across the state.
Fans are already predicting fireworks as both sides renew their rivalry, with many tipping the Police Machine to maintain their dominance, while others believe NSCDC could spring a surprise and reclaim their lost glory.
