Paris Saint-Germain secured a place in the Champions League quarter-finals after a dramatic 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Ousmane Dembélé’s first-half goal canceled Liverpool’s advantage from the first leg, forcing extra time before goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma emerged as the hero in the decisive shootout.
The highly anticipated second-leg clash saw PSG fighting to overturn a first-leg deficit, and Dembélé’s clinical strike ensured the tie ended level on aggregate.
With neither side able to find a winner in extra time, the match was decided from the penalty spot, where Donnarumma pulled off crucial saves to deny Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones.
Reacting to the result, PSG manager Luis Enrique hailed his team’s resilience. “We knew it would be tough at Anfield, but the boys showed great character. Gianluigi [Donnarumma] was exceptional, and this victory is well deserved,” he said.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot, however, lamented the missed opportunities. “It’s a painful way to go out. We had our chances but couldn’t convert them. Penalties are always unpredictable,” he stated.
