The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday disowned a letter circulating online that falsely claimed the commission had approved the outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee meeting and postponed the Ekiti State Congress and governorship primary.
The purported document, dated November 10, 2025, and attributed to INEC’s Secretary, was described by the commission as fabricated and criminal.
Victoria Eta-Messi, INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, stated that preliminary checks showed the signature on the letter had been forged.
“The correspondence did not emanate from the office of the Secretary to the commission or any official channel of INEC,” Eta-Messi said in a statement.
She added that the commission views the forgery as a serious electoral offence and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
INEC warned political parties, media, and the public to disregard the document entirely. The commission is collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The controversy follows a previous letter from PDP officials Abdulrahman Muhammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, dated November 5, 2025, which requested the postponement of the Ekiti primaries.
INEC had rejected that submission for failing to meet regulatory requirements, stating that notices must be jointly signed by the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary.
The commission called on individuals engaging in such criminal acts to desist, emphasizing the importance of electoral integrity and public trust.
