Lagos State was thrown into mourning on Wednesday following a fatal road accident at Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road, which claimed the lives of two people and left three others critically injured.
According to LASTMA spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq, the crash occurred near the Primary Health Centre, Meiran, when a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck reportedly lost control after suffering brake failure while speeding.
The truck rammed into a commercial mini-bus with registration number EPP 541 YF and four commercial tricycles with registration numbers KTU 360 QN, LND 444 QL, LSR 444 QN, and EKY 122 QP.
The violent impact caused extensive damage, trapping commuters in crushed vehicles and twisted metal. LASTMA operatives and concerned members of the public promptly rescued three severely injured victims, who were immediately taken to Mobonke Hospital along Meiran Road for urgent medical care.
The bodies of the two deceased were handed over to the Nigeria Police for further action.
The driver of the Dangote Silo Mixer Truck reportedly fled the scene shortly after the crash.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Lagos roads, urging motorists; especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles to ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on any journey.
Bakare-Oki also reminded drivers to strictly adhere to regulated speed limits, noting that excessive speeding and poor vehicle maintenance remain leading causes of fatal road accidents in the state.
LASTMA appealed to all road users to exercise caution, prioritise vehicle roadworthiness, and obey traffic regulations in the interest of public safety across Lagos.
