Delta State Police operatives have arrested a 67-year-old woman, Lydia Osanebi, for producing and distributing adulterated dry gin in Ughelli.
The arrest followed a coordinated operation by the Eagle Net Special Squad, Ughelli Surveillance Team, acting on credible intelligence.
According to a statement released by the Delta State Police Command, operatives executed a search at Osanebi’s residence on 14th December 2025, recovering large quantities of dangerous chemicals, empty and newly printed seals, packaging materials of various dry gin brands, over 60 litres of adulterated gin, super glue, stickers, and shot glasses.
The suspect voluntarily confessed to repackaging and producing fake gin using recycled original bottles for over 20 years.
The statement further warned that methanol, one of the recovered substances, is highly toxic and capable of causing severe health complications, including organ failure, blindness, coma, and death.
The Police Command assured residents of its commitment to protecting public health and safety, urging the public to avoid consuming unregulated products and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or the control room on 0803 668 4974.
Investigation into the scope of distribution and other persons involved is ongoing.
