Maiduguri, Borno State – Tragedy struck on Wednesday evening as a bomb exploded at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque near Gamboru Market in Maiduguri during evening (Maghrib) prayers, reportedly claiming several lives and injuring others.
The Borno State Police Command confirmed the incident and called for calm, assuring residents that security measures had been deployed.
In a statement, the spokesperson for the command, Nahum Daso, said, “Ongoing sweeping operations by police EOD are underway following a suspected explosion at Al-Adum Jumaat Mosque today at about 1800HRS during prayers.
Police EOD personnel have cordoned off the area to ensure public safety, while investigations are ongoing.”
Daso urged residents to remain vigilant, adding, “Members of the public are advised to remain calm as security operations continue. Further updates will be communicated soon.”
Security operatives were seen at the scene conducting sweeping operations to prevent further incidents, as local residents expressed shock and fear following the blast.
Details about the exact number of casualties and injuries are still emerging. Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine the cause and identify those responsible.
