The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to ensure that the country’s tax system is fair and inclusive, insisting that workers must be involved in the formulation of any new tax laws.

In its 2025 Christmas message on Wednesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero stressed that tax policies should promote “tax justice,” with wealthy individuals and corporations paying their fair share while regressive taxes that disproportionately affect low-income earners are removed.

He warned that any tax law developed without workers’ participation would be considered unjust and unacceptable.

The NLC also raised concerns over alleged distortions and forgery linked to some tax policies, saying such practices undermine public trust and credibility.

“Together, in this season and beyond, we must insist on Tax Justice where the rich pay their fair share and all forms of regressive taxation are removed. It is therefore our responsibility to remind the Government that any tax system that does not include workers in its formulation remains unjust,” the NLC statement said.

The labour body further called on Nigerians to unite in demanding equitable governance and pledged to mobilise workers against policies that worsen economic hardship. It highlighted the need for social justice, access to quality healthcare and education, and a safe and secure environment for citizens.

The four tax reform bills, which faced opposition from some federal lawmakers from northern states, are set to take effect on January 1, 2026.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier signed the bills into law, with the government describing the reforms as the most comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system in decades.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and various civil society organisations have called for a suspension of the new tax laws, citing concerns over their potential economic impact on citizens and businesses.
