Elder Emmanuel Titilayo Owolabi, a retired Customs officer, has regained his freedom after being abducted in his hometown of Ora-Igbomina, Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State, over four weeks ago by armed bandits.
The ex-Customs officer was initially asked to pay a ransom of N200 million. However, it remains unclear whether the family paid the full amount or negotiated a reduced sum before his release.
His freedom was announced by media icon and former Ambassador to the Philippines, Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, OON, who also serves as the Asiwaju of Ora-Igbomina.
In a press statement issued on behalf of the community, Farounbi expressed gratitude to God for the safe return of the elder statesman, describing him as a patriot and a worthy senior citizen.
The community extended appreciation to the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and the state government for their support throughout the period of captivity.
They expressed confidence that the government would continue to strengthen security, particularly in boundary areas of the state.
Commendations were also given to the Police, Military, and other security and intelligence agencies for their sacrifices and efforts in protecting lives and property across the country.
Ora-Igbomina residents acknowledged the role of both mass and social media in bringing national attention to the incident despite the town’s remote location. Traditional rulers in Ifedayo Local Government Area, including the Orangun and Asaoni, were praised for their concern, support, and intervention during the crisis.
The Akesin, chiefs, pastors, imams, and citizens of Ora-Igbomina were also commended for their prayers, solidarity, and collective efforts. The statement emphasized that unity remains the community’s greatest strength and concluded with a call for continued cooperation, self-reliance, and vigilance in addressing shared challenges.
