The Ogun State Police Command has arrested one suspect in connection with the death of popular Afro-Fuji singer, Adesina Afeez, widely known as Destiny Boy.
The arrest was confirmed in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Babaseyi Oluseyi, who said the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for a detailed probe.
According to the police, investigations commenced immediately after reports of the singer’s death were received. Oluseyi said, “The Ogun State Police Command has since commenced investigations into the death of Adesina Afeez, aged 22 years, popularly known as Destiny Boy. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for detailed investigation. One suspect is currently in custody while investigations are ongoing.”
News of Destiny Boy’s death surfaced on Sunday following the circulation of distressing videos on social media showing his body being conveyed to a mortuary. The videos triggered widespread reactions, grief, and speculation over the circumstances surrounding his death.
In one of the viral clips, the singer was seen lying at the back of a vehicle, with cotton wool placed in his nostrils and ears. The development sparked intense public debate, prompting an associate of the late artiste to address the issue in a separate video.
The unidentified associate dismissed rumours of foul play, stating that Destiny Boy had been battling a private health challenge before his death. “God, I want to do this video before people start saying rubbish about Destiny Boy’s cause of death. We all came to this life to write our own history. Destiny was nursing a health issue in his body before he died. We tried for him, but he didn’t make it,” the associate said.
Born Afeez Adeshina, Destiny Boy started his music career at a young age and became popular for his unique Fuji-infused sound. He worked as a backup dancer for Fuji musician Pasuma at T2 Boys Studios in Agege before rising to fame.
He gained nationwide attention in 2019 after releasing a Fuji cover of Davido’s hit song If, which went viral on social media. He also released covers of songs by Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor, alongside original tracks such as Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan, and Lowkey.
The late singer welcomed his first child with his partner, Iremide, in November 2024.
Police authorities said further updates would be made public as investigations continue.
